This Nikon is my very first dslr camera. The pictures it takes are amazing, in low light situations or not. This camera has the same sensor that the d7000 has. which we know how great of a camera that is. However when choosing my Dslr i did have trouble picking between canon or nikon. I know they both make amazing camera and lenses. i did go to the store to see how they each felt. When i did that they both were very similar (5100 vs canon t3i). so i went with the nikon based on the fact that it seems to take better photos through the research i have done. Although the canon is known to have better video mode so it a better all around camera. i highly recommend this camera to anyone wanting to get into photography and take amazing photos!

I purchased this camera about 6 months ago and have absolutely loved it ever since. It is easy to use, customizable, and takes stunning photos straight out of the box. I recently took it to Hawaii on vacation and captured some amazing shots and video.

I like the video capabilities, though they are not what I use it for primarily. The time lapse feature is well done and easy to use.
The only complaint that I have is the (minor) noise generated by the (continual) auto-focus motor during video capture. That can be a pain. Additional note: A nice "bonus" feature is that this camera can use old manual focus lenses - even the non-AI models. They can only be used in Manual exposure mode. You will have to use an external meter to calculate exposure (or use the histogram information in the photo playback to check exposure). If you don't mind using classic, old-school photography technique, lenses like the 50mm f1.4 and 55mm micro Nikkor can acquired at very low cost. They can produce outstanding results with this camera using the "Rangefinder" mode to help indicate when your subject is in focus. You will need to make sure that the lens that you want will not interfere with the mirror in the camera - this caveat would mostly apply to older fish-eye and specialty lenses that were designed to use with the mirror locked-up in the older film cameras of the day.

I'm still learning to use the camera mainly because When I purchased a disc to format for the camera, I could not format it with the camera. I'm trying to determine if the D5100 needs a specific disc or if there is something wrong with the camera. I used the disc from my D40 and was able to operate the camera and when I switched the new disc to my D40 it is operational. With the transferred disc the D5100 seem to work beautifully , but i'm trying to determine if there is an internal problem with the camera or just the fact that I'm not understanding something about formating the disc.

Wow got this camera 2 days ago and have been loving it every sence. This is my first DSLR so I don't know much about how to use it but it was fairly easy to take out of the box and just use the many Auto settings which turn out some beautiful pics.
